Alki

A familiar sight to those who traverse Alki Beach might be the Statue of Liberty—or its replica, rather. Present-day Alki is a mix of mid-century bungalows, medium-rise waterfront apartments and condominiums, waterfront businesses, and a bike/foot trail that for several miles, is tucked neatly between the narrow road and a slim beach. Alki’s settlers, the Denny Party, originally called the area New York Alki, because several of the members were from New York, and they had learned the word for “eventually” in Chinook Jargon (Wawa). This neighborhood’s fate was never meant for the city, it’s the beach town atmosphere and the waterside activities define this community along with historic abodes, like the Hanson-Olsen Home or Hamilton Viewpoint Park for its Elliott Bay and Seattle vistas.
